Fausto to Receive AASLD Distinguished Achievement Award

Nelson Fausto, M.D., Professor and Chair of UW Medicine Department of Pathology, will receive the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) at the association's annual meeting in Boston on November 2nd. This award is given to an individual in honor of his or her sustained scientific contributions to the field of liver disease and the scientific foundations of hepatology.  The award honors a sustained contribution in the area of liver disease, physiology, anatomy or pathology, rather than a single discovery or major achievement.

AASLD, founded in 1950, is the leading organization of scientists and healthcare professionals committed to preventing and curing liver disease. It is an international society involved in all aspects of hepatology. The annual meeting has an attendance of over 7,000 physicians, surgeons, researchers, and allied health professionals from around the world. Mentoring, sharing of knowledge and dedication to professional growth and development are among the core values of AASLD.

Dr. Fausto is internationally recognized for his work on liver regeneration and carcinogenesis in experimental animals and humans. In June he received the Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho Medal from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, the highest honor offered by the school.
