Sharing Your Innovative Research Tools

How researchers can disclose and share biological materials

Has your lab developed transgenic mice, antibodies, cell lines or constructs that could be licensed to companies or other research institutions? Would you like to share your research tools with industry to advance research and facilitate the development of diagnostic tests and drugs while also generating revenue for you and your laboratory, department, and college?

UW TechTransfer is dedicated to the broad dissemination of all UW technologies, including innovative research tools. We utilize appropriate licensing strategies based on the type of material, its potential applications, and other factors.

“Sometimes inventors are hesitant to disclose their biological materials to industry because they believe the potential licensee would then own the material or gain control of the licensing. That is not the case; the UW controls the licensing of biological materials and retains ownership of the materials even after licensing,” states UW TechTransfer.

Even if the biological material isn’t new, or has been discussed in a published research paper, it can still be licensed to companies because it is not necessary to patent biological materials for them to be commercialized. Our goal is to disseminate UW innovations as widely as possible so they can help the greatest number of people so we license biological tools to multiple companies.

Pharmaceutical or biotechs find new transgenic mice for internal research via colleagues or peer-reviewed journals, so marketing them is more successful once the scientific community has read about them. UW TechTransfer recommends researchers let them know as soon as they have published data on their transgenic mice so they can market them more efficiently.

The first step in sharing research tools is to disclose them to UW TechTransfer. Researchers should contact UW TechTransfer by submitting an ROI form online.

If researchers are uncertain as to the value of their research tools they can contact UW TechTransfer (techtran@u.washington.edu or 206-543-0905), as they are happy to discuss the commercial potential of research projects prior to submission of an ROI.

Quilt Exhibit at the UWMC Skylight Gallery Featuring Katy Gollahon
Two quilts by UW Medicine Pathology Research Scientist Katy Gollahon are featured in a new UWMC exhibit entitled Zarzuela. The exhibit runs through February 27 in the Sky Light Gallery on the third floor of UWMC's main lobby area near the Healing Garden. For more information, please read the University Week article on the Quilt Exhibit.

Katy has been quilting for over 20 years but I only began making "art" quilts in the last five or six years. It takes her anywhere from a couple of weeks to six or seven months to make a quilt depending upon the size and complexity of the pattern, and of course, how much free time she has away from the lab. Red Pavilion (pictured left) was part of a series inspired by Asian watercolors. Seeing Red (pictured right) is part of a series that Katy created using repeating blocks much the way traditional quilts do.

Katy is currently on the advisory board for the Fiber Arts Certificate Program for UW Extension and will have another show called "Palettes of Pattern and Form" at the University House in Wallingford, February 21 – June 15, 2008. Katy was also president of the Contemporary QuiltArt Association from 2005-2007 and is currently in the process of editing a book showcasing art quilts from that organization.

Employee of the Quarter: Delores Darrin, Cytogenetic Technologist
Delores Darrin was selected as the Summer 2007 UW Medicine Employee of the Quarter. Delores is a Cytogenetic Technologist at UWMC and has been working at the UWMC for 18 years. An Aberdeen Washington native, Delores graduated form the University of Chicago and came to UWMC in 1989 from the State Cytogenetics lab at Fircrest. She loves country music and animals, and enjoys spending time at her property in the Wishkah Valley by Aberdeen. Delores is one of the top Neoplastic Cytogenetics experts in Seattle, often sought out for her diagnostic expertise and ability to improve Hematologic case turnaround times. We are very fortunate to have her on our team.

Delores was specifically cited in her nomination as the go to person in cytogenetics for her knowledge base, diagnostic skills, patience, and mentorship of her colleagues. Congratulations Dolores! Great work! An awards ceremony hosted in her honor will be scheduled for later this month.

The following UW Medicine employees were also nominated and considered for the award by the Employee Recognition Team:
  • Toni Bennett
  • Anthony Trotter
  • Annabelle Abrenica
  • Toni Baullinger
  • Janet Miller
  • Hong Vo
  • Lindsey Scaggs
Many thanks to all of you that submitted a nomination on behalf of one of your colleagues. The Employee of the Quarter Award would not be possible without your active participation. The March issue of PathWays will feature Delores' award ceremony and also solicit nominations for the Fall 2007 UW Medicine Pathology Employee of the Quarter.

West Campus Garage Construction
The West Campus Parking Garage expansion work will commence on Monday, February 4th. This garage is located next to the Foege complex on the western edge of the Health Sciences Center. The new garage will occupy the space where presently the trailers are located but the lay down area for the contractor will be the remaining space within the fence.

This will mean the following:
  • Vehicular access will be off the Brooklyn entrance only. Access using the University (east) Ave. entrance will not be available
  • Pedestrian access will be from Pacific. Access under Foege (Skamania Lane) and through the fence will not be available
  • The new garage will add about 375 additional spaces and is slated to be completed in early 2009, prior to the closure of the lots near the Stadium for the Sound Transit work which is slated to begin in Spring of '09
UW Light Rail Station Plans
Sound Transit recently made public its plans to build a light rail station by Husky Stadium. Check out the details in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
