Violence Prevention
From Mindy Kornberg, Vice President of UW Human Resources:
A year ago this month, we lost a beloved staff member as the tragic result of relationship violence. As administrators and human resource professionals, we play a special role in promoting awareness and prevention resources. I hope you will continue to promote the Violence Prevention and Response briefing sessions that are open to all UW students, faculty and staff free-of-charge. These 50-minute sessions focus on recognizing the warning signs of violence, how to respond, and campus resources and policies. Please read, distribute and/or post the this Violence Prevention announcement.

West Campus Parking Garage Construction Update

As many of you are already aware the parking garage expansion project is underway with site demo and excavation work nearly complete. The contractor will begin installing the shoring system, retaining walls and foundations for the new building shortly. The building will really start to take shape in July when they are scheduled to pour concrete for the first floor of the new garage.

The site demolition and excavation phase of the project is just about complete and the ongoing drilling for the concrete piles should wrap up early next week. The contractor will place thirty-seven concrete shafts that are either 3’ or 5’ in diameter and will be drilled to a depth of about 35’. The good news is that this will be the majority of the loud work and it will be wrapping up next week. The rest of the project will primarily consist of some excavation and then preparation and placement of concrete for the garage structure so once the drilling is complete there will just be concrete and material trucks and some site work machinery on site. I mainly wanted to convey that the early and somewhat noisier work should be finished up soon.

When completed, the project will feature a five level parking garage structure that will connect to the existing parking garage and add about 340 new spaces. Included in the project is roughly 12,000 square feet of space for future offices located on the south end of the building on two levels. The construction is scheduled to be complete in February of 2009.

Julie Moore, Award-Winning Student

Julie Moore, a research assistant in Kristin Swanson’s Lab, has been awarded a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious national scholarships for mathematics, science, and engineering majors. This scholarship is designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. Goldwater scholars receive up to $7,500 to cover expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. The scholarships were awarded to 282 students nationwide from a pool of 1,164 applicants. Participating four-year institutions are permitted to nominate just four undergraduates to the national competition.

Julia grew up in northern Utah and moved to Seattle to attend school. She is currently a junior at the University of Washington, majoring in Applied Computational and Mathematical Sciences and Microbiology. In addition to studying for school, she works in the Kristin Swanson Lab that studies the growth and spread of gliomas, which are very diffuse brain tumors.
