  • Rent: $0.50-$1.20 per square foot
  • Lower rents and housing costs, lots of units available
  • Suburban environment; Mill Creek is more upscale
  • Need a car – local bus service is minimal
  • Bus routes to campus: Community Transit 810, 812, 850, 855, 860, 870, 875, 880; Sound Transit 510, 511, 512
  • Commute time: 30-60 minutes one way
West of I-5, North of Lake Union: Shoreline, Greenwood, Green Lake, Phinney Ridge, Wallingford, Fremont, Ballard
  • Rent: $1.00-1.65 per square foot
  • Long time residents, quiet, young families, accessible to downtown and U District; lots of condos and apartments
  • Bus routes to campus: Metro 31, 44, 46, 48, 74, 75, 301, 370; easy biking
  • Commute time: 15-25 minutes one way
East of I-5, North of Lake Washington: Northgate, Lake City, Maple Leaf, Wedgewood, Sand Point, Ravenna, Laurelhurst, University District

  • Quiet families, UW students; Laurelhurst is more upscale; more single family dwellings
  • Bus routes to campus: Metro 25, 65, 66, 67, 68, 72, 74, 75, 76, 78, 79, 83, 243; easy biking

Magnolia-Queen Anne Hills:
  • Rent: $1.25-2.00 per square foot
  • Magnolia: lower crime, isolated, mixed families; Queen Anne: young professionals, urban
  • Bus routes: Metro 31, 45; easy biking on Burke-Gilman Trail
  • Commute time: 20-25 minutes one way
Downtown Seattle: Belltown, Eastlake, Pioneer Square, SoDo, Georgetown
  • Rent: $1.10-2.00 per square foot; Parking: $75-$100 per month
  • Crime worsens as you go south, Eastlake and Belltown are trendy, parking is huge issue, urban at its best and worst
  • Bus routes: Metro 7, 25, 43, 66, 67, 70, 71, 73, 74, 83

East Central Seattle between 520 and I-90: Montlake, Madison Park, Capital Hill, First Hill, Central District, Madrona, Leschi

  • Montlake-Madison Park: UW professors; Madrona: affluent, rentals very limited, small town feel; Capital Hill: offbeat, urban, older housing; First Hill-Central District: rejuvenating but higher crime, lower cost

  • Commute time: 20-30 minutes one way
South East Seattle: Beacon Hill, Mount Baker, Seward Park, Rainier Valley

  • Very diverse with strong community ties, crime can be an issue, some areas rejuvenating
  • Bus routes: Metro 7, 9, 48, 205
  • Commute time: 30-45 minutes one way
West Seattle: Alki, West Seattle, White Center, Highland Park
  • Rent: $1.00-1.75 per square foot
  • Alki-West Seattle: Gentrified, mid to upper class, long time residents; White Center-Highland: housing projects, crime is a factor
  • Bus routes: no direct route to campus, need to go downtown first
  • Commute time: 30-45 minutes one way; jams on West Seattle Bridge a key factor
South Seattle County-North Pierce County: Burien, Renton, Tukwila, SeaTac, Kent, Des Moines, Federal Way, Auburn, Tacoma
  • Rent: $0.50-1.25 per square foot
  • Lower rents and housing costs, lots of units available
  • Suburban, dense population that spreads out the further south you go
  • Bus routes: Metro 133, 167,197; Sound Transit 586
  • Commute time: 45-60 minutes one way
East Side: Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Duvall, Kirkland, Redmond, Medina, Bellevue, Newport Hills, Issaquah, Mercer Island
  • Rent: $.90-1.85 per square foot (cheaper farther north)
  • Kenmore-Bothell-Woodinville-Duvall: small town, more rural, families; Kirkland-Redmond-Bellevue-Issaquah-Mercer Island: more affluent, young professionals
  • Bus routes: Metro 167, 205, 243, 271, 272, 277, 372; Sound Transit 540
  • Commute time: 30-60 minutes one way; jams on 520 and I-90 bridges key factors
