Diagnostic Services and Patient Care

UW Medicine Pathology offers a full range of diagnostic services in anatomic and surgical pathology, autopsy service, and the following specialty areas: collagen diagnostic, cytogenetics, gastro-intestinal, dermatopathology, electron microscopy, flow cytometry, HPV and cytology, histology, immuno-histochemistry, bone and soft tissue, breast, liver and renal pathology. We provide a variety of timely and accurate diagnostic services by experienced and board-certified faculty and technical staff, offering a full range of expert consultative and clinical services for UW Medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) and the Harborview Medical Center (HMC). UW Medicine Pathology examines over sixty-five thousand anatomic pathology cases each year.

The number of specimens examined in surgical pathology has increased by almost 10% per year in the last 3 years and is now approximately 24,000 per year at UWMC, including more than 2400 frozen specimens. Services at UWMC and HMC are coordinated. HMC is the site for cytology for the whole system. HMC has now become the center for neuropathology, to take advantage of the very strong academic programs of neurosurgery and neurology at that hospital.

Our specialized services in cytology, cytogenetics, flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry are internationally renown for their quality and innovation. Cytology in particular has experienced a remarkable growth the last few years. In areas of surgical pathology, gastrointestinal pathology and renal pathology are two of the busiest subspecialties, both for inpatient and external consulting work. Our pathologists located at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center are the world’s experts in the pathology of bone marrow transplantation and in outcomes such as graft versus host disease and hepatic veno-occlusive disease.
