SAMPLE SUBMISSION
Ship Monday through Thursday ONLY. Please PHONE AHEAD to notify the CDL that a sample is being sent. Submitting a Sample for Collagen Screening - Biochemical Studies:
1. Cultured Fibroblasts Please submit two (2) T25's of cultured cells. (CVS cells for prenatal diagnosis). Please only label the sides of flasks.OR
2. Skin biopsy Please submit a single biopsy (2-3 mm in diameter) in tissue culture medium.
We prefer to receive cultured cells but are able to accommodate the receipt of a biopsy if facilities for explant are not available to you. Skin specimens are best obtained from the back upper arm. Cleanse the area with alcohol. DO NOT use iodine for cleansing as it will inhibit cell growth.Only a small sample of skin is required, approximately 2-3mm in diameter. A disposable "punch biopsy" works best. Immediately place the skin sample in tissue culture medium (such as RPMI) or viral transport medium. Transport the biopsy immediately to a Cytogenetics tissue culture laboratory for explant or directly to the CDL.
Submitting a Sample for DNA-Based Testing - Molecular Studies:
1. Blood sample Please submit 7-10 cc of blood drawn in EDTA (purple top tube). Minimum requirement (for testing infants) is 5 cc. Transport the sample by overnight courier at room temperature.
OR
DNA should be extracted from 7-10 cc of blood drawn in EDTA (purple top tube). The amount of DNA needed is 200-300 µl (at a concentration of at least 200 ng/µl). For simple PCR and restriction digest (testing of relatives) DNA extracted from 2-3 cc of blood is sufficient.
There will be a charge of $50.00 to extract DNA from blood as the sample must be sent to a Central DNA Lab for processing.
Blood samples (or DNA) should be well labeled with patient's full name and an identifying number.
