UW Medicine Pathology Women’s Health Services offers state of the art clinical diagnosis for human papillomavirus (HPV), setting the standard for regional women’s health services in this critical area of detection. In addition to HPV testing our faculty and experienced team of technicians provide accurate and timely clinical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseasess and other related conditions. With recent developments cervical cancer detection and the increasing reliance on additional testing to augment traditional Pap testing, we are expertly situated to accomodate all of your women’s health referral cases.

Cervical Cancer and HPV Testing
• Nearly 60 new cervical cancer cases are reported in King County each year
• 63 women in the State of Washinton died of cervical cancer in 2005 with an average of 15 deaths reported each year in Seattle and King County
• The American Cancer Society estimates that over 11,000 cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagosed in the US this year
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that cervical cancel claims the life of ten women a day in the US
• One in four women between ages 14-59 in the US is infected with HPV
• Washington State has made the HPV vaccine available for residents up to 18 years old

At UW Medicine Pathology Women’s Health Services we are committed to the early detection and prevention of HPV and other women’s health related diseases. As such we look forward to working with you to improve the health and well being of King County and Washington State women. Educating our patients is the first step towards reaching that goal. And providing critial background information on HPV and their clinical service options is an important part of the process.

HPV Director
The Director of the UW Medicine Pathology HPV Group is Nancy Kiviat, M.D. Dr. Kiviat is Professor of Pathology, at the University of Washington and Chief of Pathology and Director of the Cytopathology Service at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Washington. Dr. Kiviat is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington, and a Full Member in the Program of Cancer Biology at the FredHutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington. Dr. Kiviat received her medical degree, and completed her pathology residency at the University of Washington. She completed her Pathology Fellowship in Cytology at Hammersmith Hospital/Royal Marsden Hospital in London, England. Dr Kiviat was also the Wilms’ Tumor Fellow at Children’s OrthopedicHospital and Medical Center, Seattle Washington. She is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology. Dr. Kiviat has participated on several national committees including the National Committee for establishment of criteria of the Bethesda Cytologic Classification System, and several NIH Standing Study sections for Epidemiology, and Aids and related research. She is an attending pathologist and the Director of the School of Cytotechnology at Harborview Medical Center, as well as the Director of Harborview’s Cytology Fellowship program. Dr. Kiviat has authored more than 150 articles published in peer reviewed journals, in addition to many book chapters. Dr. Kiviat provides editorial support to several professional journals as an ad-hoc reviewer for the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of Infectious Disease, and the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
