Clinical and Research Background

Dr. Keene’s clinical specialty is neuropathology and ophthalmic pathology with special emphasis on degenerative diseases of brain and retina. Dr. Keene is a co-investigator in the UW Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center neuropathology core and is actively involved in the acquisition, storage, and analysis of brain tissues from patients with various neurodegenerative diseases and healthy controls. In conjunction with his clinical duties, Dr. Keene’s research is focused on the innate immune response in the brain and retina. The goal of his research to to identify key genes and pathways involved in neurotoxicity derived from chronic innate immune activation in diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and glaucoma. By understanding these pathways, Dr. Keene hopes to identify novel therapeutic targets using molecular, pharmacologic, and cell based approaches. In addition to clinical and research activities, Dr. Keene directs the graduate level “Mechanisms of Neurodegeneration” course as well as the pathology component of the Basic and Clinical Science Course for ophthalmology residents and fellows, and is actively involved in teaching residents and fellows in pathology, ophthalmology, neurology, and neurosurgery.
