Regulation of Fibroblast growth and Matrix synthesis during inflammation
For many years, we have been studying the extracellular matrix (ECM) particularly in two acquired diseases: chronic inflammation and fibrosis.
Fibroblasts are the major cell type responsible for ECM production in most connective tissues, and our laboratory has been studying the regulation of fibroblast growth and its ECM production by various cytokines and growth factors. Using the human idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and chronic periodontitis as models for fibrosis and chronic inflammation, respectively, we are studying the importance of fibroblast subpopulations and local environment of the ECM in diseases and wound healing. We are attempting to define specific interactions between ECM components and fibroblasts and elucidate the biochemical signaling reactions that determine these interactions.
