Clinical and Research Background

Dr. Schmechel’s clinical areas of interest include cytopathology and genitourinary pathology. His research program, primarily in collaboration with University of Minnesota colleagues Dr. Gregory Metzger and Dr. James McCarthy, involves identifying and validating biomarkers (typically protein products of genes assayed by immunohistochemistry) of aggressive biological behavior of prostate cancer. The long-term goal of these studies is to utilize histopathologic features and biomarker expression as ground truth in studies designed to improve the diagnostic and prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging-based methods to survey prostate tissue in vivo. Dr. Schmechel additionally works with numerous other collaborating investigators through use of core facilities of Northwest BioSpecimen and his expertise in diagnostic histopathology, biomarker studies, and digital pathology techniques.
