LEAP Summit Recap
The 2006 LEAP Summit on Saturday, February 4th was a tremendous success with educators from all over the Puget Sound region attending the forum promoting discussion and collaboration amongst life sciences education outreach organizations. Lee Huntsman, President Emeritus of the University of Washington and Executive Director of the State of Washington's Life Science Discovery Fund, delivered the keynote address entitled,
"Working Together to Forge a Better Washington."

The summit provided area teachers and school district administrators with a unique opportunity to directly discuss life sciences education outreach opportunities with specific program managers. The LEAP Summit increased awareness of regional science outreach programs, fostered collaborations between existing programs, educators and industry representatives and generated an online resource guide for teachers, administrators and guidance counselors. According to numerous summit attendees, the Department of Pathology's Autopsy and Gross Room tours were the highlight of the day. Special thanks to Dr. Corrine Fligner, Janet Miller, Jessica Norberg, Dr. Jason Love, Dan Luff and Elaine Tanji for making it all possible.
If you'd like to know more about LEAP, please visit the
LEAP Summit 2006 website or contact Steve Berard at

Employee of the Quarter
Diane Willis, Harborview Office Assistant, was selected the Fall 2005 Department of Pathology Employee of the Quarter. As the inaugural recipient of the award, Diane set the bar very high for the nominees to follow. Diane's professionalism and outstanding customer service skills were recognized by several of her peers and supervisors. Diane will recieve a $100 University Bookstore gift card at an awards ceremony on February 16th at Harborview Medical Center.
Ten nominations for the award were submitted, representing a wide variety of dedicated, talented and motivated employees from UWMC, HMC and HSC. After a difficult decision making process, the Department of Pathology Employee Recognition Team was most impressed by Diane's nomination. Diane's commitment to service, innovation and accountability stood out amongst a strong field of nominees.
Nominations for the Winter 2006 Employee of the Quarter will be accepted in March. Watch this space for details on how you can nominate a colleague for the award.
Swift Arrival

Mari Swift, Research Scientist in Karen Swisshelm's Lab, gave birth to Kyle Owen Dickson on Janurary 10, 2006 at 6:19 PM. Kyle tipped the scales at 8lb, 1oz and is 20.5 inches long. Mom and young Kyle are healthy and looking forward to another Cougar victory over the Huskies this fall.
Fiscal Photography
When you think of the Department's Fiscal support team you immediately think of budgets, invoices and money.

What you didn't know is that their talents are not limited to the wonderful world of academic finance. Previously in this space we featured Fiscal Administrator Toni Bennett's photography, including some of her work exhibited at the Cascasdes Academy of Photography in Issaquah.
Under Toni's guidance, Fiscal Techs Zale Carroll and Judi Morris have also enthusiasticaly taken up the craft as evidenced by the photographs displayed here.

Toni suggested that Zale and Judi start with beginner camera (Fuji E550) and encouraged them to go outside during lunch breaks to take photos of the campus. Zale and Judi haven't taken classes yet, but are clearly a quick study with the help of Toni and Adobe Photoshop.
Click here to check out some photographs by Judi and Zale.

Inclement Weather/Suspended Operations Policy Reminder
The chill in the air should remind us all to be familiar with the University's inclement weather and suspended operations policies. Please note that the medical center is considered "essential services" and is excluded from the UW Suspended Operations policy. All administrative staff are required to report to work for their scheduled work day. Be sure to check the bus system snow day schedule to take an alternate bus if needed. If you will be late, be sure to call the front desk and your direct supervisor. If extenuating circumstances occur and it becomes impossible to come to work you must contact your direct supervisor. Last November new campus numbers took effect that provide information about operations at the three UW campuses during emergencies and severe weather conditions, updated to the minute.
Please take note of these numbers for up to date information on campus operations:
