In the News

Nelson Fausto in The Daily
Nelson Fausto, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology, was featured once again in the local media, this time in The Daily, the University of Washington's student newspaper. In a follow up piece on Dr. Fausto's research that appeared in the Seattle Times last month, The Daily's Playing with Stem Cells article offers a UW and student perspective on Dr. Fausto's stem cell research, NIH funding limitations and the impact President Bush's restrictions on embryonic stem cell research has on UW faculty.
Faculty Promise and Potential
The Summer 2006 issue of the University of Washington School of Medicine Alumni Magazine explores the Promise and Potential of stem cell and regenerative medicine at UW. Several Department of Pathology faculty members are featured with special attention paid to Chuck Murry's research and his involvment in the establishment of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine. Please visit pages 12-18 to read the article.
Stem Cell Debate Continued
Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell held a press conference on campus last month in reaction to President Bush's veto of a bill that would have lifted restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. Please read University Week's coverage of the media event here.
Friendly Neighbor
According to an article that appeared in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer last week, UW is contemplating how it can become a better University District neighbor. Click here to read the recommendations of the group organized to identify the quality of life problems in the University District.
Popular Destination
If you are feeling a little claustrophobic this summer there may be a reason why. According to the Seattle Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Seattle is on track for the busiest summer on record. Over nine million overnight guests visited Seattle in 2005 with hotel occupancy rates even lower this year, confirming what we already knew: Seattle, especially favorite tourist destinations like the Space Needle and Pike Place Market, is crowded. Visit the Seattle PI to read more about the Seattle Tourist Boom.
We're Number 10
According US News and World Report, the University of Washington Medical Center is the 10th best hospital in the country, receiving high marks in many of its clinical specialty areas. Over five thousand hospitals were considered for the annual ranking. For more details on UWMC's ranking, please visit the US News and World Report website.

Path People

Community Outreach
As part of the Department's ongoing community and education outreach efforts, Research Assistant Professor Robert Smith, Ph.D., and graduate student Tina Albertson, M.D., recently hosted three students participating in the annual School of Medicine Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP). Bob and Tina's mentorship of Emanual Kahsai, Tiana Francy and Shauntreal Ivey focused on the value of research in training with added emphasis on their individual undergrad and graduate experiences.

The students were especially interested in the research environment and what they should concentrate on as undergraduates - grades, GRE scores, real life experiences and lab work - at their respective institutions to become successful research scientists. Pictured with the students are Drs. Smith and Albertson and Jennifer Schleit, Department of Pathology graduate student from Brad Preston's Lab.
New Residents and Fellows
Last month the Pathology Newsletter featured individual profilies on the thirteen new residents and fellows that joined the Department of Pathology on July 3, 2006. Now you can access the always popular photo page of the 2006-2007 Department of Pathology residents and fellows. You can also find this information on the Residents' IWeb Directories - Residents & Fellows.

New HMC Slide Room Coordinator
Please welcome Daniel Hamilton, HMC's new Slide Room Coordiantor. Daniel, California born and Seattle bred, joined the Department of Pathology at Harborview Medical Center in July. Before coming to Harborview, Daniel worked at Washington Athletic Club in Seattle and was in the Army for four years prior to that. For two years he was based at Ft. Lewis in the Criminal Investigation Division and was stationed in Korea for one year. Daniel loves to play golf at Greenlake and spend time Ebay resaling. Daniel has a weaknesses for nachos and Starbucks Mocha.

Zale Carroll Traded to the K-Wing
The Department of Pathology is lucky to have versatile staff members such as Zale Carroll to help out areas in need of fiscal support on short notice. Zale's value to the department has never been more evident than when she recently accepted the K-Wing fiscal specialist position vacated by Chanthala Stewart. Many of you may already know Zale. She has been with the Department for over a decade, processing travel reimbursements, assisting with grant proposals and post-award grant administration, and handling many other responsibilities from the main administrative office.

Zale started with the K-Wing on temporary assignment in June, learning the lab purchasing system and helping K-Wing Grant and Contract Manager Peggy West with various tasks. Zale will continue to process purchasing for all Pathology K-Wing labs and will assist Peggy during the busy Fall and Winter grant proposal seasons. Zale is fearless about the new electronic grant submission system, grants.gov. She will also do post-award grant administration, such as reconciliation of expenses and closing out of budgets.

Special thanks to Judi Morris and Gloria Fontelera for pitching in during the extended transition period between Chanthala's departure and Zale's arrival. Your assistance was greatly appreciated by many. Along with Zale, thank you for being so flexible and such great team players. Kudos also are in order to Barb Peterson, Toni Bennett and Greg Lawrence for providing guidance during the transition.
