1/18/93 Idiogram Album: Human copyright 1991 David Adler and Michael Willis Idiogram Album: Mouse copyright 1992 David Adler ABOUT IDIOGRAM ALBUMS The Idiogram Album files are PostScript versions of standard idiograms. These PostScript files were created to be compatible with graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator, Aldus FreeHand, Corel Draw, Alysys Virtuoso. These programs will allow band by band manipulation of the idiograms so that abnormal (translocations, deletions, inversions, etc.) chromosome idiograms can be constructed. The Human set is based on the ISCN 1985 High Resolution Banding (ISCN 1985: An International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature, Harden, D.G. and Klinger, H.P., eds., published in collaboration with Cytogenet. Cell Genet., Karger, Basel, 1985). Each human file contains idiograms for three resolutions of banding (400, 550, 850 total bands). The mouse set is adapted from Nesbitt and Francke (Chromosoma 41:145-158, 1973) and Edward Evans' standard karyotype from Lyon & Searle "Genetic variants & strains of the laboratory mouse" 2nd edition, OUP 1989. The following people have contributed ideas, suggestions and banding opinions: Christine Disteche and George Martin of the Department of Pathology, University of Washington; Roland Hubner, University of Liege. Gif versions of the idiogram files can be found in the directory "gif". Thanks to Rob Harper, Center for Scientific Computing, Espoo, Finland, for converting the PostScript files to gif. LICENSE AGREEMENT: These files are provided for use by individuals only. Use for or by "for profit" organizations is explicitly prohibited. You may not distribute the "Albums". Idiogram Album: Human and Idiogram Album: Mouse are copyrighted. You may copy the files for personal use only. You may use the files for research publication figures, meeting presentation slides. Use of these files in any way for commercial purposes is explicitly prohibited. Contact David Adler, see address below, for information about commercial licensing. DISCLAIMER The sole responsibility for the use of these files is yours. No claim of accuracy is stated or implied. You assume all responsibility for inspecting all figures, slides, etc. that include these idiograms to insure standard and accepted chromosome banding patterns. *** Please do NOT distribute these files. You may use and modify the files for the production of slides, publication graphics, posters. I would appreciate acknowledgement in publications using these files (see below). Individual idiograms: Individual PostScript files are in the directories labeled "Human" and "Mouse". These files have a ".ps" extension which can be changed if necessary to be recognized by your graphics software (such as ".ai" for Adobe Illustrator). UNPACKING compressed sets (".sit.hqx" or ".tar.Z"): The files are compressed in various formats depending on the system you specified in your request they all must be "unpacked" before use. PC: (retrieve the individual PostScript files) Mac: 1. Decode binhex files (.hqx), the decoded files will now look like an application (with app icon) which can be double clicked and will unstuff themselves. NeXT: You have received these via NeXTMail, drag the folder to desired location (ex: ~/Library) and double click. After "unpacking" you should now have a collection of files with names that should be self explanatory (human_01, Human_X, mouse1.ps). Never work on the original files always make working copies. You must have graphics software that can handle PostScript files. These files can be viewed and manipulated with programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Aldus Freehand, they can also be placed by Aldus Pagemaker, etc. I suggest illustration software for maximum use of the files (Illustrator, Freehand, Corel Draw, Altsys' Virtuoso, etc.). The files can be copied and renamed with new extensions - characters after "." can be changed as needed, " *.ai " - Adobe Illustrator, " *.ps " - PostScript, etc. Some software and direct printing of files may require the following line be added at the end of each PostScript file, before the " %%Trailer " line: showpage (this can be done with any text editor/word processor, be sure to save as ascii) PostScript is a trademark of Adobe Systems Inc.
