Postdoctoral Research

Postdoctoral positions are open periodically in the laboratory. Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Murry directly. Given the complex nature and the relative newness of the field of regenerative biology, applicants are encouraged to consider at least 3 year training periods, though shorter periods may be possible. For US citizens or permanent residents, the UW has a variety of training grants that may be able to provide salary support. Applicants who bring their own funding are, of course, always appreciated.

Graduate Training

Graduate training in the Murry Lab toward a PhD is available through the departments of Pathology , Bioengineering , the Medical Scientist Training Program , or the combined Molecular and Cell Biology training program . For US citizens or permanent residents, the UW has several training grants that may be available to support a graduate student stipend and tuition. Applicants who bring their own funding are, of course, always appreciated.

Undergraduate Training

Highly motivated undergraduates, whose class work or experience has afforded them an understanding of basic cell and molecular biology, may apply for undergraduate research projects. Students are typically assigned to work closely with a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow on some aspect of cardiovascular research. Previous students have been supported by the Howard Hughes Foundation, the Mary Gates Foundation and the American Heart Association.

Clinical Training

Subspecialty clinical training in diagnostic cardiovascular pathology can be arranged for candidates who have completed 2 years of training in Anatomic Pathology. The University of Washington has a very active program in heart failure and cardiac transplantation, including ~40 ventricular assist device implants and ~30 heart transplants per year. There are currently 4 attending cardiovascular pathologists who participate in clinical training (Chuck Murry, Dennis Reichenbach, Kelly Smith, Mike Laflamme). Areas of diagnostic training include cardiac transplant pathology, endomyocardial biopsies, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy and cardiovascular devices.
